A More Reasonable Knife Block
Ever get fed up with the design of a common object? When I do, I design my own.
We've all seen kitchen knife blocks. You may have one. Well, I dislike them. Here's a typical one.
Have you ever seen something so absurd? Just look at the number of knives. We'll let the 6 steak knives slide. Maybe you have people over for steak all the time. The biggest offender is the number of prep knives. I'm sure you know what they're all for and use them? Don't lie.
These sets are made to sell to suckers who think buying more knives will make them a better cook. But people who know what they're doing will usually tell you that you just need a good chef's knife for 90% of tasks. A paring knife helps for finer tasks. You may also want a big cheap serrated knife, which you will mostly use for bread. Optionally, some shears are great for cutting small bones and opening packages. Those 4 things pretty much have you covered. Everyone knows this.
So why can't I find a knife block that supports this? I decided to design my own.
I gave this sketch to a woodworker on etsy, who executed it perfectly.
